…In 1970, G. Fritsch and E. Hitzig discovered that electrical stimulation of certain parts of the cerebral cortex caused muscle contraction in certain parts of the body, revealing the existence of the motor cortex, and localization theory became definitive. K. Brodmann also divided the cerebral cortex into 52 areas based on differences in tissue structure examined under a microscope, and assigned serial numbers to each area (1909). Currently, this brain map is widely used in research on the cerebral cortex, and progress is being made in elucidating the functions assigned to each area. …
