Born: March 24, 1835, St. Peter near Klagenfurt
[Died] January 7, 1893. Vienna Austrian physicist. He studied at the University of Vienna, where he became a professor (1863) and director of the university's Institute of Physics (66). He measured the cooling of high-temperature objects and discovered that the radiation from a black body is proportional to the fourth power of the absolute temperature (79). Later, L. Boltzmann derived this law based on thermodynamic theory (84), so it is called the Stefan-Boltzmann law. He is also known for his research on electricity, kinetic theory of gas molecules, and fluid dynamics.
