Riobamba (English spelling)

Japanese: リオバンバ(英語表記)Riobamba
Riobamba (English spelling)
The capital of Chimborazo Province in central Ecuador. It is located in the Riobamba Basin in the Andes, about 170 km south of the capital Quito, at an altitude of about 2,700 m. To the northwest, the country's highest peak, Chimborazo Volcano (6,310 m), rises. The area has been open since ancient times, and people have lived there since before the Inca Empire. In 1534, the Spaniards built a settlement about 20 km west, where Cahabamba is now, but in 1797 a landslide caused many lives to be lost, so it was relocated to its current location. It is known as the place where Ecuador's first constitutional conference was held in 1830. In addition to distributing agricultural products, the city is also home to industries such as cotton textiles, wool textiles, carpets, shoemaking, and food. A regular market is held every Saturday, attracting Indian farmers from the surrounding area. It is connected to Quito and Guayaquil by rail and road. Population: 95,505 (1990).
