A state in southeastern Brazil. Its capital is the city of Rio de Janeiro. Its area is 44,083 km2, which is only 0.52% of the national land area, but it is home to 13.3 million people (1995), which is about 8.5% of the country's total population. The state is divided into two parts by a coastal mountain range running from southwest to northeast, the Atlantic coast and the Paraiba River basin. Mount Agulhas Negras (2,787 m) in the Itatiaia Mountains in the west is the highest point in the state. The coastline is 705 km long. The Paraiba River originates in Bocaina in the state of São Paulo and flows 1,100 km to São João da Barra, supplying water and sewage, industrial water, and electricity to many cities.
