The capital of the eponymous region in the northwest of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Central Asia. Population 267,000 (1991). Located on the bank of the Irek River, a tributary of the Ural River. Founded on May 14, 1869 as a small fort at Ak-Tyube (Kazakh for "white hill"), it has been the capital of Turgai Region since 1891. The construction of the Orenburg-Tashkent Railway from 1899 to 1905 connected the city to Europe and Asia. During the civil war, it was a base for revolutionaries. 中央アジア,カザフスタン共和国北西部,同名州の州都。人口26万7000(1991)。ウラル川支流イレク川岸に位置する。1869年5月14日,アク・チュベ(カザフ語で白い丘の意)に小堡塁として建設され,91年よりトゥルガイ州の郡都。1899‐1905年のオレンブルグ・タシケント鉄道建設によってヨーロッパ・アジアの各地とつながる。国内戦期には革命勢力の一拠点となった。クロム合金,合金鋼,農業機械,レントゲン設備,食品などの工場がある。
