The capital of the eponymous region in the northwest of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Central Asia. Population 267,000 (1991). Located on the bank of the Irek River, a tributary of the Ural River. Founded on May 14, 1869 as a small fort at Ak-Tyube (Kazakh for "white hill"), it has been the capital of Turgai Region since 1891. The construction of the Orenburg-Tashkent Railway from 1899 to 1905 connected the city to Europe and Asia. During the civil war, it was a base for revolutionaries. There are factories producing chrome alloys, alloy steel, agricultural machinery, X-ray equipment, and food products.
