This is the diary of Hino Sukekatsu (1577-1639), a Grand Minister of State with the second rank. It is also called Ryogen'in-ki after his posthumous name. There are relatively many surviving copies, and many missing years, but the Nijiki covers the period from 1612 (Keicho 17) to 1638 (Kan'ei 15), and there are also other diaries such as the Jingu-ki (1597-99, 1619-20) and Bunryu (1637). Sukekatsu was close to Tokugawa Ieyasu from an early stage, and as he served as a military messenger for nine years from 1630 to 1639, there are many interesting articles on that subject scattered throughout the diary, which are generally quite detailed.
