Actuary - Actuary (English spelling)

Japanese: アクチュアリー - あくちゅありー(英語表記)actuary
Actuary - Actuary (English spelling)

Actuarial professionals who analyze future risks and uncertainties using mathematical methods such as probability theory and statistics. They are translated as actuaries, but are also called actuaries in Japan. In Japan, they generally refer to those who are full members of the Japan Actuarial Institute. To obtain the qualification, one must pass all subjects of the qualification examination (five basic subjects and two specialized subjects) held annually by the Japan Actuarial Institute and take professionalism training. Those who pass one or more basic subjects become research members of the Japan Actuarial Institute, those who pass five basic subjects become associate members, and those who pass the specialized subjects and complete the professionalism training become full members. It takes at least two years to pass all subjects, but it takes an average of five years to become an associate member and about nine years to become a full member, so it is common to obtain the qualification while working in the field. As of the end of March 2013, the number of full members was 1,373. Many qualified individuals work for life insurance companies, non-life insurance companies, trust banks, consulting firms and other organisations, where they are involved in setting insurance and pension rates and developing products.

The status of actuaries as a professional occupation is said to have been established in the 19th century, and the oldest actuarial association in the world was founded in the United Kingdom in 1848. The history of actuaries in Japan is also long, with the Institute of Actuaries of Japan being founded in 1899 (Meiji 32).
