Oruro is the capital of the department in southwestern Bolivia. It is located about 200 km southeast of La Paz, on the eastern edge of the Altiplano plateau in the Andes, at an altitude of about 3,700 m. Founded in 1606, it prospered as the center of a rich silver mining region during the Spanish colonial period. It declined when the silver mines were depleted in the 19th century, but developed again with the development of tin deposits. Tungsten and copper are also mined in the surrounding area. There is a large smelter in the city, which refines most of the tin produced in the country. It is the location of the Oruro Polytechnic University (1892). It is a transportation hub, with the main road and railway connecting La Paz and Potosi passing through it, and the junction of the road and railway leading to Cochabamba to the east. Population: 183,194 (estimated 1992). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
