Liutprand (English spelling)
[Birth] Around 920
[died] about 972 Italian historian and bishop. A nobleman from Lombardy who served as a page to Hugh, King of Italy. After Hugh's death, he served Berengar II, Duke of Ivrea, and went to Constantinople as an envoy in 949. After returning to Italy, he came into conflict with Berengar II, who became King of Italy, and in 955 he approached Otto I of Saxony, becoming Bishop of Cremona in 961. He then wielded influence at the Synod of Rome, and in 968 he went to Constantinople again as an envoy. He began writing history around 958, and his works Antapodosis (Atonement) and Relatio de legatione Constantinopolitana (Report of the Legations) are important historical sources on the relationship between Italy, Germany, and Byzantium in the 10th century.

King of the Lombards (reigned 712-744). He was exiled from his country as a child due to internal conflict, but returned and became king. Taking advantage of the chaos in the Byzantine Empire caused by the Destruction of Icons (→ Icon Controversy), he seized the areas around Ravenna, Spoleto, and Benevento from the Byzantine Empire, and took control of almost all of Italy. He allied with Charles Martel, mayor of the Frankish Kingdom, to prevent Islamic invasions, and during this time he besieged Rome twice between 730 and 742, often threatening the Pope. Domestically, he issued a series of laws to expand royal power, prevent violent revenge, and emphasize the handling of property, and built the kingdom into its heyday.
