The Battle of Leyte
A war literary work by Ooka Shohei. It was serialized in the magazine Chuokoron from 1967 to 1969. Based on a vast amount of material and interviews with survivors, it depicts the battles on Leyte Island, which caused a huge number of casualties during the Pacific War. It is one of the author's representative works, which he continued to revise based on newly released material after publication, and for which he won the 13th Mainichi Art Award.

大岡昇平による戦記文学作品。昭和42年(1967)から昭和44年(1969)にかけて「中央公論」誌に連載。膨大な資料や生存者からの聞き取りをもとに、太平洋戦争で膨大な死者を出したレイテ島での戦闘を描いた作品。発表後に新たに公開された資料に基づき、改稿を続けた著者の代表作であり、本作により第13回毎日芸術賞を受賞した。
