A gastropod shell of the Turbinidae family (illustration). The name is derived from Yaku-gai (meaning a shell from Yakushima). The shell is heavy and sturdy, reaching a height of 18.5 cm and a diameter of 20 cm. The coils are conical and low, with nodules on the shoulders of each layer, but with thick ribs. The last coil is remarkably large. The surface is blackish brown or blackish green, with alternating dark brown and yellowish white spots. The opening is large and round, and the inside has a strong pearly luster. There is no umbilicus. The operculum is calcareous, with a white, bulging exterior and a flat, brown skin on the interior.

リュウテンサザエ(ガイ)科の巻貝(イラスト)。屋久貝(屋久島産の貝の意)より転じた名。殻は重厚堅固で高さ18.5cm,径20cmになる。巻きは円錐形で低く,各層の肩に結節がならぶが,太い肋がある。最後の巻きは著しく大きい。表面は黒褐色または黒緑色で濃褐色と黄白色の斑紋が交互にある。殻口は円くて大きく,内面には強い真珠光沢がある。臍孔(せいこう)はない。ふたは石灰質で外面は白くて膨らみ,内面は平らで褐色の皮がある。
