〘Noun〙 It started when Kumano nuns (Kumano nuns) sent from Kumano Mountain in Kishu traveled around the country to solicit support and sold Goouhoin (Chinese King's Seal) . Later, nuns would chant prayers and sing songs while explaining picture scrolls of hell and paradise to solicit support. They also sometimes engaged in prostitution. 〘名〙 もと紀州熊野山から派遣された熊野比丘尼(くまのびくに)が諸国を勧進し歩いて、牛王宝印(ごおうほういん)を売ったことに始まり、のちに、地獄、極楽の絵巻物の解説をしながら念仏を唱え、歌を歌って勧進した比丘尼。また、時には売春もした。歌比丘尼。※仮名草子・都風俗鑑（1681）四「くゎんじん比丘尼(ビクニ)の風」
