...Machine elements, such as levers, wedges, pulleys, wheels, and axles, have existed since the age of ancient technology, but the concept of machine elements is thought to have been formed gradually with the development of mechanical industry and mechanical engineering. They first appeared clearly in literature in the 1850s, and became more widespread when Germany's F. Lülow published a textbook on machine design (1861). After England's WC Unwin wrote The Elements of Machine Design (1877) and adopted a method of teaching machine design through explanations of machine elements, this method became the standard style for machine design textbooks and spread worldwide.
