Japanese: フクロシマリス(袋縞栗鼠) - フクロシマリス（英語表記）striped possum

A squirrel-like marsupial mammal of the Petaidae family, with three prominent black vertical stripes on a white or cream background. One of the three vertical stripes runs down the center of the back to the upper surface of the tail. On either side of this stripe run black lines from the snout through the eyes, down the sides of the body, down the rear of the hind legs, and to the ankles. It has a well-developed brood pouch on its abdomen. Body length 23.5-30 cm, tail length 32-35 cm. Distributed in New Guinea and Australia. It lives in the trees of the rainforests, and is rarely seen by humans because it is nocturnal.

白色またはクリーム色の地に，3本のよく目だつ黒色の縦縞模様をもつ，リスに似た有袋目フクロモモンガ科の哺乳類。3本の縦縞のうち1本は，背の中央を通って尾の上面に至る。その両側を吻（ふん）から目を通り体側を進んで，後肢の後部を下降し，くるぶしに達する黒線が走る。腹部によく発達した育児囊がある。体長23.5～30cm，尾長32～35cm。ニューギニアとオーストラリアに分布。多雨林の樹上で生活し，夜行性のためもあって人目につくことは少ない。
