Lake Vättern (English spelling)

Sweden's second largest lake, with an area of 1,912 km2. It is 30 km wide and elongated, stretching from north-northeast to south-southwest for 136 km, with this direction being dominated by a bedrock fracture zone. The lake surface is 88 m above sea level and its maximum depth is 31 m. The lake was formed on the front edge of a glacier about 10,000 years ago. The Göta Canal connects Lake Väner to Gothenburg in the west, and the Motalaälva River to the Baltic Sea in the east. It is surrounded by farmland and forests, and the Småland Mountains to the south. There are heavy and light industrial towns nearby, including those for aircraft, automobiles, and textiles.

スウェーデン第2の湖で，面積1912km2。幅30km，北北東～南南西に136kmと細長く，この方向は基盤岩の破砕帯に支配されている。湖面標高88m，最大水深31m。約1万年前に氷河前縁にできた湖である。イェータ運河で西はベーネル湖からイェーテボリへ，東はモータラ川Motalaälvaを経てバルト海に通じる。周囲は農地と森林で，南にスモーランドSmåland山地がある。付近には航空機，自動車，織物などの重･軽工業の町がある。
