Sweden's second largest lake, with an area of 1,912 km2. It is 30 km wide and elongated, stretching from north-northeast to south-southwest for 136 km, with this direction being dominated by a bedrock fracture zone. The lake surface is 88 m above sea level and its maximum depth is 31 m. The lake was formed on the front edge of a glacier about 10,000 years ago. The Göta Canal connects Lake Väner to Gothenburg in the west, and the Motalaälva River to the Baltic Sea in the east. It is surrounded by farmland and forests, and the Småland Mountains to the south. There are heavy and light industrial towns nearby, including those for aircraft, automobiles, and textiles. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
