In early modern England, they were called "Rantsers," and were descendants of the Antinomianists (those who rejected moral law). The Ranters movement was a popular movement that flourished at the turning point of the Puritan Revolution (1640-60), and was a popular rebellion that occurred during the civil revolution of the early modern period. The social and cultural changes in England in the early modern period produced many poor people and refugees who were driven from their homes and villages. In response to their appeals, many lay preachers emerged, many of whom were itinerant workers who, after being called by God, preached the gospel and prophesized both indoors and outdoors.
