In early modern England, they were called "Rantsers," and were descendants of the Antinomianists (those who rejected moral law). The Ranters movement was a popular movement that flourished at the turning point of the Puritan Revolution (1640-60), and was a popular rebellion that occurred during the civil revolution of the early modern period. The social and cultural changes in England in the early modern period produced many poor people and refugees who were driven from their homes and villages. In response to their appeals, many lay preachers emerged, many of whom were itinerant workers who, after being called by God, preached the gospel and prophesized both indoors and outdoors.

近代初期のイギリスで〈喧騒派〉と呼ばれ，いわゆるアンティノミアニズム(道徳律廃棄派)の系譜に属する人々のこと。ランターズ運動はピューリタン革命(1640‐60)の転換期に興隆した民衆運動であり，近代初期の市民革命の中に起こった民衆反乱であった。近代初期におけるイギリスの社会，文化変動は，郷々や家々を追われた多くの貧民や流民を生み出した。彼らの訴えにこたえるために，多くの平信徒説教師が輩出したが，その多くは移動労働者で，神の召命後，屋外でも屋内でも福音を説き預言を告げて回った。
