The inhabitants of Estonia. The population is estimated at about one million, and they speak Estonian, a Finno-Ugric language. They are an ethnic minority that has been ruled by Denmark, the Teutonic Knights, Sweden and Poland since the 16th century, and was annexed by Russia in 1721. The country's name, Eesti (Estonian), is said to have been given by J. Jansen, who was active in the late 19th century and promoted ethnic awareness, and traditionally the national name was Maarahvas, meaning "villagers".
