A storage facility that temporarily stores cargo or relays its transport. Since ancient times, cargo storage facilities have included warehouses (also called kura or kuri), open storage areas, sheds, lumber and coal yards, and so on, all of which had two roles. One was to act as a link or relay between different modes of transport, as in the case of relaying between sea and land transport. To fulfill this function, many warehouses are located within ports, and warehouses located near ports are called harbor warehouses. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
