…One of the peculiar asteroids discovered by Carl Gustav Witt in 1898. It is unusual in that it may approach the Earth unusually closely and in that it exhibits significant light variation. Based on its orbital semi-major axis of 1.46 astronomical units and eccentricity of 0.22, it may approach as close as 22.4 million km from the Earth near perihelion. It is well known that the value of the astronomical units was measured on the occasion of close approaches that occurred in 1900 and 1931. Eros's light variation is repeated regularly with a period of 5 hours and 16 minutes, and the amplitude of the variation ranges from zero to a maximum of 1.7 magnitudes. …
