The original species is a plant of the Brassicaceae family native to Europe, which was developed from kale, a type of cabbage, for decorative purposes. It was introduced to Japan during the Edo period and improved in Japan, resulting in many varieties. The leaves come in reddish purple and white, and are broadly divided into crepe-colored wavy-leaved kale (Nagoya kale), round-leaved kale (Tokyo round-leaved and Osaka round-leaved), which have no creases on the leaf edge, and cut-leaved kale. Crepe-colored kale is suitable for potted plants and flower beds, while the others can be used as cut flowers. In recent years, a tall variety (round-leaved kale) has been developed specifically for cut flowers, which can grow up to 70 cm tall. Seeds are sown in July, and can be enjoyed from December to January when the leaves color.
