In plants, needles are a general term for hard, woody objects with sharp, pointed tips that protrude from the plant body. In animals, needles refer to appendages made of chitin, keratin, or calcareous material that protrude from the surface of the body, and are found in various animal groups such as sea urchins (echinoderms), porcupines (mammals), and porcupine fish (fish), but they do not necessarily have the same origin.

植物では植物体から突出して先端が鋭くとがった硬い木質のものの総称で，針ともいう。その成り立ちによって茎針（カラタチ，サイカチ），葉針（ニセアカシア，メギ），根針（ヤシ科の一部）と区別するほか，毛状体に属するもの（バラ，タラノキ）もある。動物では，体表から突出したキチン質，角質，石灰質などの付属突起をいい，ウニ（棘皮動物），ヤマアラシ（哺乳(ほにゅう)類），ハリセンボン（魚類）などさまざまな動物群に見られるが，起源はかならずしも同じではない。
