Foramen ovale

Japanese: 卵円孔 - らんえんこう（英語表記）foramen ovale

(1) A hole in the left and right atrial septum of the fetal heart. Since the fetal circulatory system does not have a small circulation, blood that reaches the right atrium via the inferior vena cava continues to the large circulation via the left atrium. The foramen ovale closes shortly after birth, but if it does not close after birth, it is called a patent foramen ovale. (2) A small hole in the posterior part of the left and right greater wings of the sphenoid bone, which serves as a passage for the mandibular nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerve.

(1) 胎児の心臓の左右心房中隔にあいている穴。胎児の循環系には小循環がないので，下大静脈を経て右心房に達した血液はそのまま左心房を経て大循環へ向う。卵円孔は出生後まもなく閉じるが，生後も閉鎖しないものを卵円孔開存症という。 (2) 蝶形骨の左右大翼の後部にある小孔で，三叉神経の一枝である下顎神経の通路となる。
