French geologist and archaeologist. Born in Saint-Guiraud. He devoted himself to the study of cave deposits and fossil mammals throughout France, beginning with excavations in Auch in 1834. Excavations from 1860 to 1865 proved the existence of humans in the Pleistocene. In 1863, he divided the Pleistocene into three periods, Archaic, Middle, and Neogene, based on the changes in fossil mammals. In 1869, he was appointed head of the paleontology department at the Natural History Museum in Paris. He published a special report on Cretaceous and Tertiary fossil urodeles, and is known as the discoverer of Tertiary fossil monkeys. Louis Lartet (1840-1899), who discovered Cro-Magnon man, was his son. [Masae Omori] [Reference items] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
