Damask - damask (English spelling)

It has the same weave as donsu, but the ground and pattern are reversed on the front and back. That is, there are two types: one with a pattern in lacquer weft on a vertical red ground, and one with a pattern in lacquer weft on a vertical red ground. This weave is said to have been perfected in China, and the technology spread from East to West. It was brought to Japan during the Tensho era (1573-92). Of the products that were brought to the West, the hemp products made in Damascus, Syria, were superior, and this became the general name. Silk, rayon, and wool products are used for curtains, dresses, bedding, etc., while cotton, staple, and hemp products are used for tablecloths, handkerchiefs, napkins, etc.

緞子(どんす)と同じ組織で、地と文様が表裏反対の組織からなる。つまり経朱子(たてじゅす)地に緯(よこ)朱子で文様を表したものと、緯朱子地に経朱子で文様を表すものがある。この組織は中国で完成され、東西へ技術が伝播(でんぱ)したとされている。日本へは天正(てんしょう)年間（1573～92）にもたらされた。西へ伝わったもののうち、シリアのダマスカスDamascusでつくられた麻による製品が優れていたため、これが一般的名称となった。絹、人絹、毛のものはカーテン、ドレス、寝具などに、綿、スフ、麻のものはテーブルクロス、ハンカチーフ、ナプキンなどに使われる。
