It has the same weave as donsu, but the ground and pattern are reversed on the front and back. That is, there are two types: one with a pattern in lacquer weft on a vertical red ground, and one with a pattern in lacquer weft on a vertical red ground. This weave is said to have been perfected in China, and the technology spread from East to West. It was brought to Japan during the Tensho era (1573-92). Of the products that were brought to the West, the hemp products made in Damascus, Syria, were superior, and this became the general name. Silk, rayon, and wool products are used for curtains, dresses, bedding, etc., while cotton, staple, and hemp products are used for tablecloths, handkerchiefs, napkins, etc. [Kadoyama Yukihiro] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
