...A village in Yama District, northwest of Fukushima Prefecture. Established in 1954 by merging the villages of Atsushio and Kano. Population 3,871 (1995). Located at the northern tip of Aizu, it borders Yamagata Prefecture across the Iide mountain range to the north. The name Atsushio is said to come from the hot water that gushes out within the village, and even today there is Atsushio Onsen (a pure salt spring, 61°C), as well as Jigenji Temple, which has a camellia-carved wooden lacquer sash (an important cultural property).
