The term was used to describe a condition in which voluntary movement is not performed well despite the absence of motor paralysis, but it was Guillaume BADuchenne de Boulogne (1806-75) who clearly established the concept. In 1858, he described the movement disorder caused by tabes dorsalis and clarified that it is not caused by motor paralysis but by the inability to properly coordinate the action of several muscles to perform a movement.
