First King of Germany. Reigned 911-918. Formerly Grand Duke of Franconia. After the Carolingian dynasty of East Frankish Germany was cut off in 911, he was chosen by the various tribes as King of Germany. Externally, Germany was troubled by invasions by Magyars, Normans, and Slavs, while domestically, he was unable to suppress the independence of the various tribal Grand Dukes, including Grand Duke Henry of Saxony, and only managed to maintain national unity with the support of the domestic clergy. He had no sons, and when he died, he appointed his former rival, Grand Duke Henry of Saxony (Henry I), as his successor.

初代のドイツ国王。在位911‐918年。もとフランケン大公。911年東フランクのカロリング王統が断絶したのち，諸部族からドイツ国王に選ばれた。対外的にはマジャール人，ノルマン人，スラブ人の侵入に悩まされ，国内的にはザクセン大公ハインリヒはじめ諸部族大公の独立化を抑えきれず，国内聖職者の支持により，かろうじて国家的統一を維持した。子に男子なく，死に際しかつての対立者ザクセン大公ハインリヒ(1世)を後継国王に指名した。
