Victor Vasarely

A French painter of Hungarian origin, he studied at the Budapest Bauhaus, and lived in Paris from 1930. He was an active member of the Groupe de la Recherche d'Art visuel, a group that explored visual art, and produced paintings that created optical illusions through geometric composition. He was a painter who continued to explore the relationship between form and human vision, rather than the form itself, in geometric abstract paintings, and was a pioneer of Op Art.

ハンガリー出身のフランスの画家。ブタペストの通称〈ブダペスト･バウハウス〉に学んだのち，1930年からパリに住む。〈視覚芸術探求グループGroupe de la Recherche d’Art visuel〉の中心メンバーの一人として活躍し，幾何学的な画面構成によって錯視効果をもたらす絵画を制作。幾何学的抽象絵画のなかでも，形体そのものよりも形体と人間の視覚の関係を探求しつづけてきた画家で，オップ･アートの先駆をなした。
