A powerful clan that was active as a navy centered in Shima and Ise during the Nanboku-cho to Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Their ancestors were one of the Eight Shoji of Kumano in Kii, and their hometown is said to be Kukiura (Kuki Town, Owase City, Mie Prefecture). They initially based themselves in Nakiri, Ago County, Shima Province (Nakiri, Daio Town, Shima City, Mie Prefecture), and then moved to Tashiro Castle in Kamo-go (Toba City, Mie Prefecture), expanding their influence to Ise as well. In 1569 (Eiroku 12), the head of the family, Yoshitaka, joined Oda Nobunaga, who set out to conquer Ise, and thereafter played an active role in suppressing the Ikko Ikki rebellion in Nagashima, Ise in 1574 (Tensho 2), and in the battle against the Mori navy at the mouth of the Kizu River in 1578 during the attack on Ishiyama Honganji Temple, becoming the lord of Toba Castle with a stipend of 35,000 koku. After Nobunaga's death, he joined Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and distinguished himself in the conquest of Shikoku and Kyushu, and the invasion of Korea. In the Battle of Sekigahara, Yoshitaka joined the Western Army and committed suicide, but his son Moritaka joined the Eastern Army and was awarded an additional stipend of 20,000 koku for his achievements. During the generation of his son, he was given two fiefs, Sanda, Settsu (Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture) with 36,000 koku and Ayabe, Tamba (Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture) with 20,000 koku, which continued into the Meiji period. In 1884 (Meiji 17), both were made viscounts.
