Kiyosumi moray eel - Kiyosumi moray eel

Japanese: キヨスミウツボ - きよすみうつぼ
Kiyosumi moray eel - Kiyosumi moray eel

A perennial plant of the Orobanchaceae family (APG classification: Orobanchaceae). It parasitizes Hydrangea macrophylla and Berry's bean. It is white all over and 5-10 cm tall. It is densely covered with small, scaly leaves. In June and July, 5-10 flowers bloom upwards in a head-like cluster at the end of the stem. The corolla is white at first, then yellow, long and tubular with five lobes at the end. It grows in forests in the hilly and mountainous regions of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is also found in Sakhalin, Ussuri, the Korean Peninsula, and China. It is named after Mt. Kiyosumi in Chiba Prefecture, and Utsubo because the shape of the flower resembles a quiver for a bow and arrow.

The genus Acanthurus has flowers in a head shape and two separate calyxes. There is one genus and one species found in East Asia.
