Lamia (English spelling)

Japanese: ラミア(英語表記)Lamía
Lamia (English spelling)
A city in the southern Balkans of Greece. It is located about 150 km northwest of Athens, on the coastal plains of the Gulf of Malias in the Aegean Sea. It was founded in the 5th century BC as the center of the Maris region. It came under Macedonian control in the late 4th century BC, and in 323-322 BC the Macedonian army was besieged here by the Second Athenian League (Lamian War). In 192 BC the Aetolian League invited Antiochus III of the Seleucid Empire to the city, and it was destroyed in retaliation by Rome. In the Middle Ages it became a fortress of the Frankish Principality of Athens, and after passing through the rule of the Catalans and Turks, it became a part of Greece in 1832. It is currently a commercial and industrial center, with soap, cotton textiles, tobacco, and other industries, and wheat, olives, citrus fruits, and other products traded here. A branch line from the main railway line between Athens and Thessaloniki runs through the city to the outer port of Stylis (Stylida), about 15 km east. Population: 43,898 (1991 estimate).

Lamia
Lamia

In Greek mythology, Lamia is a female monster who kidnaps and eats children. Originally a beautiful human, she became Zeus's lover, and was hated when her children were killed one by one by Hera. She became jealous of mothers who were luckier than her, and became a monster who would steal and eat their children. Hera still did not stop persecuting her, depriving her of sleep, but in return, Zeus allowed Lamia to remove her eyes at will. It is said that she would sometimes remove her eyes and sleep in a container, during which time her children would be safe.

Lamia
