The capital of Kherson Oblast in southern Ukraine. It is a port city on the right bank of the Dnepr River, about 25 km upstream from its mouth, which flows into the Black Sea. It was built in 1778 as a Russian fortress to protect the Black Sea region, and became Russia's first military port on the Black Sea. A shipyard was also built there. In 1901, a canal was built, allowing large ocean-going ships to enter and leave the city, and after the revolution, the waterway of the Dnepr River was improved, making it the sea gateway for the entire Dnepr basin. Furthermore, the railway line connecting Dnepropetrovsk and Kharkov was opened, and it became a seaport for the cities along the line, and it developed significantly. It is an oil supply base for the Dnepr basin, and industries such as shipbuilding, combine harvesters, oil refining, wood processing, glass, cotton textiles, and food (fish processing, meat, canned goods) are well developed. It has educational and cultural facilities such as the Pedagogical University, Agricultural University, Institute of Irrigation Agriculture, History and Archaeology Museum, Local Museum, and State Music and Theater. ウクライナ南部,ヘルソン州の州都。黒海に注ぐドネプル川の河口より約 25km上流の右岸にある港湾都市。 1778年黒海地方を守るロシアの要塞として建設され,黒海におけるロシア最初の軍港となり,造船所も建設された。 1901年運河により大型外洋船の出入りが可能になり,また革命後ドネプル川の水路が改修されて,全ドネプル流域の海の玄関となった。さらにドネプロペトロフスクとハリコフを結ぶ鉄道路線が開設されて,この沿線諸都市の海港ともなり,著しく発展した。ドネプル流域への石油供給基地であり,造船,コンバイン,製油,木材加工,ガラス,綿織物,食品 (水産物加工,食肉,缶詰) などの工業が発達している。教育大学,農業大学,灌漑農業研究所,歴史・考古学博物館,郷土博物館,州立音楽・演劇場などの教育・文化施設をもつ。鉄道分岐点で,空港もある。人口 36万 5000 (1991推計) 。
