A region in the southern Meseta of Spain. Meaning "dry land" in Arabic. White-walled villages and towns dot the vast plains, and the windmills peculiar to La Mancha are a sight to behold. The villages of Mota del Campo, Campo de Criptana, and Consuerga are the setting for Cervantes' Don Quixote. This agricultural region cultivates grapes, olives, wheat, and saffron. It is the number one producer of wine for the domestic market, and also produces a cheese called "Manchega." [Masahide Okazumi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
