Brown ring reaction

This is also called the brown ring test. This is a reaction for detecting nitrate and nitrite ions. Put concentrated sulfuric acid in a test tube, gently add an equal amount of saturated iron (II) sulfate solution, and gently pour the sample solution down the inner wall of the test tube, taking care not to mix the two liquids. A dark brown band will appear at the boundary between the two liquid phases. This is the reaction 3Fe ²⁺ +NO ₃ ^- +4H ⁺
-> 3Fe3 ⁺ + _2H2O + NO
It is believed that the nitric oxide (NO) produced by the reaction combines with the iron(II) salt to form the unstable compound [Fe(NO) _x ]SO _4. The dark brown bands disappear when heated.

褐色環試験ともいう。硝酸イオンおよび亜硝酸イオンの検出反応。試験管に濃硫酸をとり、それと等量の飽和硫酸鉄(Ⅱ)溶液を静かに加え、2液が混合しないようにして、試料溶液を試験管の内壁に伝わらせながら静かに注入すれば、2液相の境界に暗褐色の帯状部が生ずる。これは
　　3Fe²⁺＋NO₃^-＋4H⁺
　　　―→3Fe³⁺＋2H₂O＋NO
によって生ずる一酸化窒素NOが鉄(Ⅱ)塩と結合して不安定な化合物[Fe(NO)_x]SO₄を生成するためとされている。加熱すれば暗褐色帯状部は消失する。
