A passerine bird of the Weaverbird family (illustration). Total length is about 11 cm. It is slightly smaller than a sparrow, and the sexes are heterochromatic. The male's reproductive plumage is metallic and blue-black all over, with a reddish-white beak and orange-red legs. Similar to females and males in non-reproductive plumage, the dorsum is light brown with dark spots and stripes, and the underside is whitish. It lives in the savanna surrounding the rainforests of western and southern sub-Saharan Africa, and is commonly seen locally. It prefers open areas such as grasslands and grassland-like wastelands, and often lives in small groups. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
