This research group was established in colonial Korea in May 1934. It was the first organization run by Koreans themselves, with historians such as Lee Byung-jo at the core, and literary scholars, linguists, and folklorists such as Kim Tae-jun, Choi Hyun-bae, and Son Jin-tae also joining, aiming to develop research into national studies and Korean studies. In terms of historiography, it is notable for its united front character among a wide range of researchers, as it was an organization that brought together people belonging to the first two of the three major trends in historical research during the colonial period, namely ethnohistory, empirical history, and socio-economic history, and Kim Seok-hyung and Park Si-hyung, who would later occupy leading positions in the historical world of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, made their debut in academia through this society.
