An American film production and distribution company founded by Harry Cohn in 1924. Before the war, it was famous for Capra's comedies, and after the war, it distributed a succession of Academy Award-winning films, including Lean's Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962). In the 1970s, it saw success with films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), but its performance declined, and it was acquired by Coca-Cola in 1982 and by Sony in 1989, and was renamed Sony Pictures Entertainment.
