The founders of Neorealism are said to be the three mentioned above, Rossellini, De Sica, and Visconti, along with Aldo Vergano (The Sun Also Rises, 1946), Pietro Germi (1914-74) (The Law of the Outlaws, 1949), Alberto Lattuada (1914- ) (The Mill on the River Po, 1949), Giuseppe De Santis (Embrace of the Wilderness, 1947), and Luigi Zampa (1905-91) (Live in Peace, 1946). Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini belong to a later generation. Neorealism was not a film movement with a clear artistic manifesto, but rather something that emerged spontaneously from a realistic and sharp awareness of the situation shared by filmmakers of the time, and the works that emerged from this were then recognized by filmmakers as a movement in their own right, and a deliberate direction began to be explored.
