...The cult began in the area in the 7th century, but all the important buildings in the sanctuary date from the 4th century onwards. The Temple of Asclepius (Doric, 6 x 11 columns) from around 390-80 BC housed a seated golden ivory statue, and the gable carvings by Timotheos (in the Athens Archaeological Museum) are important remains. The tholos (26 exterior columns in Doric order, 14 interior columns in Corinthian order), a circular building (?) built by Polyclitus II around 360-30 BC to house the sacred serpent, is a masterpiece of architectural design, and many of its components are preserved in the local museum. ...
