Mantineia

Japanese: マンティネイア（英語表記）Mantineia

An ancient city on the Arcadian plateau of mainland Greece. It was formed as a state by the settlement of five districts (demos). It joined the Peloponnesian League from the end of the 6th century BC, but was always at odds with its southern neighbor Tegea. During the Peloponnesian War, it carried out democratic reforms and allied with Athens in 420 BC to oppose Sparta. The central city was dismantled following its conquest by Sparta in 385 BC, but the state was rebuilt the year after the Battle of Leuctra (371 BC) and a strong wall was built around it. It is also known as the place where the famous Theban general Epameinondas defeated the Spartan army (362 BC).

ギリシア本土アルカディア高原の古代都市。5地区(デーモス)が集住して国家を形成した。前6世紀末以降ペロポネソス同盟に属したが，南の隣国テゲアと常に対立し，ペロポネソス戦争期には民主的国制改革を行って，前420年アテナイと同盟を結びスパルタに敵対した。前385年スパルタの征服を受けて中心市を解体されたが，レウクトラの戦(前371)の翌年国家を再建し，強固な城壁を張りめぐらした。テーバイの名将エパメイノンダスが，当地でスパルタ軍を破った(前362)ことでも知られる。
