An ancient city on the Arcadian plateau of mainland Greece. It was formed as a state by the settlement of five districts (demos). It joined the Peloponnesian League from the end of the 6th century BC, but was always at odds with its southern neighbor Tegea. During the Peloponnesian War, it carried out democratic reforms and allied with Athens in 420 BC to oppose Sparta. The central city was dismantled following its conquest by Sparta in 385 BC, but the state was rebuilt the year after the Battle of Leuctra (371 BC) and a strong wall was built around it. It is also known as the place where the famous Theban general Epameinondas defeated the Spartan army (362 BC). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
