It can also be read as "hata". It refers to cultivated land other than paddy fields, that is, cultivated land where crops are grown without storing water. Since most crops other than paddy rice are usually grown without storing water, cultivated land means fields in areas around the world where paddy rice is not cultivated. In Japan, where paddy rice cultivation has been the foundation of agriculture, most cultivated land that can be irrigated has been developed as paddy fields, and there is a clear distinction between paddy fields and fields, both in terms of land use in land registration and in statistical treatment.

〈はた〉とも読む。水田以外の耕地，すなわち水をたたえることなしに農作物を栽培する耕地をいう。水稲以外のほとんどの農作物は，水をたたえることなしに栽培するのが普通であるから，世界的にみて水稲作を行わない地域では，耕地はすなわち畑を意味する。水稲作を農業の根幹としてきた日本では，灌漑の可能な耕地のほとんどは，水田として造成されてきた経緯があり，土地登記上の地目としても，統計上の取扱いにしても，水田と畑は明確に区別されている。
