The first post station on the Nakasendo road, located in the eastern part of the current Itabashi ward in Tokyo, was established in Shimoitabashi village, so it is also called Shimoitabashi. One of the four post stations in Edo. It is two and a half ri away from Nihonbashi, and two ri 10 cho away from the next post station, Warabi. There were 50 people and 50 horses in the post station. Itabashi developed around the bridge over the Shakujii River, from which the place name is derived. On the northwest side of the bridge is Kamijuku (present Honmachi), on the southeast side is Nakajuku (present Nakajuku), and further southeast of Nakajuku is Hiraojuku (present Itabashi 1-3-chome), and these three post stations provided the post station services. The eastern side of the post station was the lower residence of the Kaga Kanazawa domain. In 1843, there were 54 inns, 573 houses, and 2,448 people. The main inn was located in Naka-juku, and there was one waki-honjin in each of Kami, Naka, and Hirao (according to the "Yadomura Taigaicho"). Although the town was officially permitted to have 150 food sellers, it was a deserted entertainment area compared to the other three inns (Shinagawa-juku, Naito-shinjuku, and Senju-juku).
