Poetic diction

A distinctive term used in poetry to achieve poetic effects such as tone and rhythm. Classical poets in particular preferred to use poetic language that was quite different from everyday language depending on the genre of the poem, but today poetic language is often used to mean a formal and old-fashioned means of expression. 格調やリズムなどの詩的効果をあげるため，詩で用いられる独特の用語のこと。特に古典主義的な詩人は詩のジャンルに応じ，日常語とかなり異なる詩語を好んで用いたが，今日では詩語といえば，形式ばって古くさい表現手段という意味で使われることが多い。
