Oka Hakku

A Chinese scholar from the mid-Edo period. A native of Harima (Hyogo Prefecture). Shirakome was his given name. His pen name was Senri, and he was commonly known as Taichu. He was called Ryushu. His original surname was Kono. He initially studied medicine, but switched to Confucianism. He moved around to Edo, Nagasaki, Osaka, and other places, and later settled in Kyoto. He mainly studied ancient commentaries, and was skilled in languages. He wrote a great deal, and gained fame, serving as a Confucian scholar for the Hasuike Domain, a branch of the Saga Domain. Most of the works he compiled were popular commentaries on the classics, but he made use of his language skills to translate vernacular novels from an early stage, and together with Okajima Kanzan, he had a great influence on later writers. 江戸時代中期の漢学者。播磨(兵庫県)の人。白駒は名。字は千里,通称は太仲。竜洲と号す。本姓河野氏。はじめ医を学ぶが,儒に転向。江戸,長崎,大坂などを転々とし,のちに京都に定住した。学は古注を主とし,語学に長じていた。著述は極めて多く,名声を得て,佐賀藩の支藩である蓮池藩に儒官として仕えた。編著のほとんどは,経書の通俗的注釈書であるが,その語学力を生かして白話小説の翻訳を早くから行い,岡島冠山と共に,のちの文人たちに大きな影響を与えた。他に漢文笑話集や語学書などの著述も残る。<参考文献>尾形仂『小説三言』
