A North American perennial plant of the lily family (illustration). It is closely related to the genera Melanthus and Melanthus, which have primitive floral structures, and like them, contains toxic alkaloids in the plant body. The stem is 70-150 cm tall and bears a panicle at the end. The perianth has six petals, greenish-white in color, and is about 1 cm long. A well-developed spur is present at the base of the perianth, which distinguishes it from the genera Melanthus and Melanthus. Like the Melanthus genus, there is a pair of glands at the base of the upper surface of the perianth. The genus Melanthuium (English name: bunch flower) is endemic to eastern North America, and four species are known.

北アメリカ産のユリ科の多年草（イラスト）。原始的な花の構造を有しているシュロソウ属やリシリソウ属に近縁であり，これらと同様に有毒のアルカロイド成分を植物体に含んでいる。茎は高さ70～150cm，先端に円錐花序をつける。花被は6枚で緑白色。長さ約1cm。花被のつけ根に距が発達し，この特徴によりシュロソウ属やリシリソウ属から区別される。花被上面の基部にはリシリソウ属と同様に一対の腺体がある。メランチウム属Melanthium(英名bunch flower)は北アメリカ東部特産で，4種が知られている。
