Felidae, along with Canidae, are mammals that have evolved to be well adapted to carnivorous diets. Wild species are distributed all over the world except Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Celebes, most of the Philippines, mainland Japan, Madagascar, the West Indies, Antarctica, the Arctic Circle, and islands in the ocean. There are 35 to 41 extant species, depending on the scholar. Their habitats are diverse, ranging from tropical rainforests, reed thickets and brush in lowlands along rivers, rocky mixed forests in temperate zones, tall grasslands, and cold barren areas in the boreal zone, to semi-desert areas like the sand cat Felis margarita , and rocky areas in high mountains like the snow leopard Panthera uncia .
