A former town in Kitaakita County, northern Akita Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, with Mt. Moriyoshi as its main peak. The Ani River runs through the west, and the Komata River, a tributary of the Ani River, runs through the east. The Akita Inland Longitudinal Railway passes through the area. Dairy farming, including beef and dairy cattle, is thriving. Tobacco leaves and potatoes are also produced. Mt. Moriyoshi is located in the southeast. In March 2005, it merged with Takanosu Town, Ani Town, and Aikawa Town in Kitaakita County to become a city, Kitaakita City. 341.88 km2 . 7,797 people (2003). 秋田県北部,北秋田郡の旧町。ほとんどの地域が森吉山を主峰とする山地で占められ,西部を阿仁川,東部を阿仁川の支流小又川が流れる。秋田内陸縦貫鉄道が通じる。肉牛,乳牛などの酪農が盛ん。葉タバコ,ジャガイモも産する。南東部に森吉山がある。2005年3月北秋田郡鷹巣町,阿仁町,合川町と合併し市制,北秋田市となる。341.88km2。7797人(2003)。
