A general term for spiritualistic syncretistic religions in Brazil that are strongly influenced by Africa. Etymologically, it means doctor, medicine man, or priest. The main syncretistic elements are African religions, Catholicism, spiritualism, and the religions of the indigenous people of Brazil. It originated from the religion of black slaves who were forcibly relocated from the west coast of Africa to work on sugar plantations since the 16th century, but it has changed significantly under the conditions of the New World and has been heavily syncretized with other religions, so it is not appropriate to call it an African religion in general. There are also large differences in the cultures of origin within Africa, with Candomblé being strongly influenced by Yoruba culture in Sudan and Macumba being strongly influenced by Bantu culture in Congo and Angola.
