The capital of Cajamarca Department in northern Peru. It is located in the Cajamarca Plateau, in the Andes Mountains, about 120 km inland from the Pacific coast, overlooking the Cajamarca River, a part of the Amazon River system. It is about 2,720 m above sea level. It is the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, famous as the place where the last emperor of the Inca Empire, Atahualpa, was captured, imprisoned and executed by the Spaniard F. Pizarro in 1532. It is the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding agricultural areas, distributing grains, alfalfa, coffee, sugar cane, livestock, etc., and manufacturing textiles, hats, leather products, metal products, etc. Silver mining is also thriving. In addition to Inca ruins, many colonial era buildings, including the cathedral, are preserved in the city, and tourism is also an important industry. It is the location of the National Polytechnic University of Cajamarca (1962). There are hot springs nearby. A major trading center in the Andes in northern Peru, connected by roads to Trujillo, Pacasmayo, and Chiclayo on the Pacific coast and the Pan-American Highway. Population 92,600 (1990 estimate). ペルー北部,カハマルカ県の県都。太平洋岸から約 120km内陸のアンデス山脈中,カハマルカ高原にあり,アマゾン川水系カハマルカ川にのぞむ。標高約 2720m。インカ帝国の古都で,1532年帝国最後の皇帝アタワルパがスペイン人 F.ピサロに捕えられ,幽閉されたのち処刑された地として名高い。周辺の農業地帯の商工業中心地で,穀類,アルファルファ,コーヒー,サトウキビ,家畜などを集散,織物,帽子,皮革製品,金属製品などを製造する。銀などの鉱業も盛ん。市内にはインカの遺跡のほか,大聖堂をはじめとする植民地時代の建築物が多数保存されており,観光業も重要な産業となっている。国立カハマルカ工科大学 (1962) 所在地。近くに温泉がある。ペルー北部のアンデス山中の主要な取引中心地で,太平洋岸のトルヒーヨ,パカスマヨ,チクラヨの各方面へ道路が通じパンアメリカン・ハイウェーと連絡。人口9万 2600 (1990推計) 。
