Japanese: 枝変り - えだがわり

A form of plant mutation in which cells at the growing point of a stem or branch mutate, resulting in a change in the characteristics of a part of a tree or other object. Common phenomena include flowers changing from single to double, different flowering patterns, changes in leaf shape, and the appearance of variegated leaves. When useful branch mutations appear, they are propagated by grafting or cuttings, and many new varieties have been created for flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums, and tulips, as well as fruit trees such as mandarin oranges and apples.

植物の変異の一形態で，茎や枝の生長点の細胞に突然変異が起こり，樹木などの一部が変わった性質となること。花が一重から八重になったり，咲き分けたり，葉型が変化したり，斑入(ふいり)葉を生じたりする現象が多い。有用な枝変りが現れると接木や挿木で増殖し，バラ，キク，チューリップをはじめとした花や，ミカン，リンゴなどの果樹で多くの新品種が作られている。
